Growing Up, Not Breaking Away

Across our region, families are celebrating a season of graduations.

Whether it’s kindergarten, high school, college, or a career milestone, graduation is a moment to recognize growth. It’s a time to celebrate new skills, greater responsibility, and the readiness to take the next step.

Graduation isn’t about leaving behind the people who helped you get there.It’s about growing into a new role. As we congratulate this year’s graduates, we’ve been thinking about our community in a similar way.

Eastern Placer County has changed dramatically over the past several decades. We have grown into a vibrant mountain destination with year-round residents, thriving businesses, world-class recreation, complex transportation systems, environmental responsibilities, workforce housing challenges, and millions of annual visitors. Our community has grown in complexity in many ways.

The question now being explored through the LAFCO review process is whether our system of local governance should grow with it.

This isn’t about breaking away from Placer County. It’s about asking whether our community has reached a point where town-level needs deserve town-level tools. Communities throughout California have asked similar questions as they evolved. They didn’t stop being partners with their counties—they simply considered whether local leadership could better coordinate local priorities while continuing to work closely with regional agencies and neighboring communities.

That’s exactly what the current review process is designed to evaluate.

Over the coming months, we’ll continue sharing information about what incorporation could mean, what would change, what would stay the same, and how the independent review process works. We also want to hear from you. Thoughtful questions, different perspectives, and respectful dialogue are all important parts of helping our community make an informed decision.
